Multimedia used in the performance:
Phones, projections, lasers, music, cameras, imagery, film, ring tones and live feed.
I think the multimedia enhanced the performance because it was almost like adding another dimension to the play. It was another layer that gave the whole piece extra detail. In fact it's the kind of thing you add to a performance to take it go from 2D to 3D, and I think we certainly did that. It also helped to capture the chaos, danger and excitement throughout the piece because the multimedia complemented the play and set a certain tone depending on what kind of media it was.
I think the multimedia made the audience relax faster as they were welcomed into a warm and cosey setting fairly straight away. The sounds and imagery made everything appear more film like and so the audience were in a homely type of state. I think the audience were also more engaged because they became so wrapped up in the scene. It was defiantly something that added to the performance.
The
performance would not have been as effective without the multimedia because it
would have lacked the pizzazz that the media enabled it to have. I don’t believe that the performance would
have been as professional as it was, nor benefit the modern take on the play.
I believe
the most efficient moment of multimedia was the one piece that I was actually
unable to watch, however from pictures and through conversation, I heard a lot
of amazing things about. This was the scene in which Antigone was found liable
for burying her brother and was held captive in the cave. From images like the
one below, I discovered that the group used the whole of one side of a room to project
an image onto. This worked extremely well and acted as a backdrop which I found
intriguing.

How did the multimedia in each scene enhance the performance?

1. Creon announces that Eteocles will be honoured and Polynices will be shamed and left un-buried.

Video to be shown on screen in reception.

Added another dimension. The piece dripped in enthusiasm and it really reflected Antigone's confidence. She walked around with sass and had great taste in music.

2. Antigone goes to Ismene to persuade her to assist the burial of their brother. Ismene refuses.

By the tree - video shown of the thoughts of the characters.

Shows how the characters truly feel. It basically added more depth to the scene.

3. Antigone goes to bury her brother.
|
Round of wooden stumps.
|
The round circular shape almost looked like it had purposely been placed there. Almost to represent some significance (e.g the circle of life or Antigone's everlasting love - it could even be seen as a trap that Antigone has set herself into, she cannot escape).

4. Creon looks for the support of the chorus of Theban Elders in his decision to leave Polynices unburied.

Creon announces from fire escape door of 415 - chorus round the tree looking up. Audience looking up also.

It makes Creon sound bigger than he actually is. He has been given a louder voice when in actual fact his voice is the only one that matters and therefore the megaphone is almost a metaphor in itself.

5. A Sentry reports the burial of Polynices. Creon insists that the Sentry finds out who or face death.

Filmed footage of event is shown on screen top of stairs. Sentry talking to Creon.

Footage played on a loop almost to drive a person crazy. The video allowed the audience to watch acting in a different form.

6. Chorus sing about honouring gods.
|
From the yard up to windows of 413
Recorded chorus played.

Made the audience feel very much a part of the piece. Kept the traditional but in an abstract way.

7. Sentry returns with the Culprit: Antigone. Creon confronts her.
|
Burst into 413 - audience turn to see.
Lighting used.
|
Very simplistic scene which consisted of a chair and several light. This meant that the multimedia could be seen in a minimalistic but very effective way.

8. Creon confronts Ismene. Ismene tries to confess but Antigone won't allow it. And in the end, the two sisters are imprisoned.
|
Still in 413 but Creon live speaks to a projected Ismene. Antigone is walked out the room and joins the real Ismene - escorted off.
Lighting used

The scene is jam-packed with multimedia. Live feed proved a treat and enhanced the emotion that was in the room.

9. Haemon both pledges allegiance to his father, Creon, and asks that Antigone be spared. After the discussion deteriorate, Haemon storms out vowing never to speak to him again.

Traverse in 413 - iphone lights as the two talk. Throughout confrontation, lights go out, one by one.
|
This scene was lacked light and was only lit by a few phones. This symbolized the desperateness and enhance emotion within the scene.

10. Creon choses to spare Ismene, and to bury Antigone alive. As she is dragged out, the chorus express their Sorrow.
|
One light left on Creon's face. Sound of s body being dragged...etc.

This scene used a mixture of footage and theatre to show the power Creon had over everyone.

11. Tiresias attempts to advise Creon that what he is doing is wrong and that the Gods are angry. The prophecy of a dead son is mentioned.

Tiresias never moves his mouth but what he says coupled with weird underscore is played through speakers of 415.

My scene! This showed the visions of Tiresias and the consequences that could follow. It also included green distorted lasers.

12. The chorus, terrified, begs him to take Tiresias' advice. Shaken, Creon agrees to release Antigone and bury Polynices.

As many chorus as possible fill cavities of 415 and urge Creon. Three doors and side grated window thing.
|
Showed the villagers coming together to share their story as one. It was almost as if they were showing their support for Antigone in a hidden form as the chors.

13. Chorus deliver a choral ode to the god Dionysus.
|
Very professional and the lights which were distributed at certain times really proven effective to creating the imagery of a town.

14. Messenger informs Eurydice of Haemon and Antigone's death.
|
Filmed footage on repeat of Haemon stabbing himself and Antigone hanging, swinging from a branch.
|
The footage on a loop was almost distressing to watch but reflected the seriousness that the play also included.

15. Carrying the body of his dead son Haemon, Creon is then met by a 2nd messenger informing him of Eurydice's death.
|
Audience back outside looking at tree. Creon walking through the courtyard, holding Creon, confronted by messenger at the tree. Chorus look down from 415.

Creon looses the battle. He didn't have his priorities straight and lost out in the end.
